After 18 years and several thousand live shows, the performance seemed labored. I didn’t feel that it was at all about the music for these guys. Going for the tunes, I left feeling like I almost got my money’s worth.ĬHRIS: That’s the exact point I wanted to make. KIMBER: Whether you enjoyed the concert or not depended upon if you liked INXS’s music or not. With the exception of “New Sensation” and “Suicide Blonde,” their music and stage presence was about as entertaining as “The Monkees” reunion TV show. They took a four-year hiatus to prepare for this new album, and it sounds very similar to their last three.Īs far as their live show, if repeatedly quoting “Austin Powers” for laughs and using expletives to get cheers is considered entertainment, then I’m getting an agent. A favorite at the show was “Never Tear Us Apart.” But I don’t hear any chart-topping hits on their new album. This band knows how to work a crowd, and they put on quite a show.ĬHRIS: I agree that they have had their share of good songs. They did stroll down memory lane and play many of their smash hits from the late ’80s, but that is what the crowd came for. INXS actually has records hitting the charts, and are only considered old compared to teeny boppers like Hansen. KIMBER: Hello? Comparing INXS to the Stones, or Jim Morrison for that matter, is ridiculous. Along with the Stones, INXS should be focusing on retirement, not another album after 18 years. Their attempt reminded me of a similar ploy by The Rolling Stones set during their Steel Wheels tour. They tried desperately to give the illusion that they’re still cutting edge and “in” with modern music. The space age stage setup consisted of large plastic rockets on both ends of the stage, bright silver tubes wrapped around the speakers and some aluminum siding-looking plates to hide all the offstage chords and crew (who were dressed in rocket scientist lab technician coats). It was like a U2 “Pop” tour set on a really, really tight budget. They wore the overpriced trendy clothes you can get at DI for a few dollars.ĬHRIS: Their stage-set is what I found comical. They opened with their new single and title of their album, “Elegantly Wasted.” It was a good sound, not eardrum-smashing, but definitely dominant. KIMBER: It was quite a while before INXS came out, but the semi-sober crowd was more than ready. When they started throwing out band paraphernalia (picks, the singer’s necklace, etc.), I think I actually saw audience members throw things back. All of them struck their traditional “glamrock” poses, while the singer, who gave a slight resemblance to Davey Jones in parachute pants, tried his hardest to sound like Axle Rose. And where was Fonzie anyway?ĬHRIS: Their current single,”Bottlerocket,” (which I’ve yet to hear on the radio) captured some brilliant lyrical content, such as, “Everyone’s a bottle rocket, shoot, shoot, shoot in the sky.” I thought I was watching Winger gone grunge. Aside from a few people hyper enough to enjoy even Vanilla Ice music, no one cared about the Cunninghams. KIMBER: They didn’t win any fans with their patronizing comments at the beginning (“So what do you guys do up here, read your Bible?”). I think we can both agree that their performance was rather poor. CHRIS: Let’s start with the opening band, The Cunninghams. Other than those two-minor gripes, there’s not a lot of bad things to say about this tool. If you’re planning on using this tool on a daily basis and keeping it for an extended period of time, you should probably buy a sturdier constructed holster, of which are plentiful and relatively inexpensive. That’s not to say it’s going to fall apart anytime soon, but if you’re a tradesman, you know how wear and tear can break things down. The holster could be a bit sturdier as well. Then again, if you are using your mutli-tool on a daily basis, you probably want a heavier duty tool to begin with. We found it to be a bit on the heavier side. Nothing in life is perfect and the Center-Drive is no exception to the rule. Gerber is headquartered in Oregon and they have a long reputation of manufacturing top-quality tools. You really don’t see that on too many multi-tools nowadays. We also love how there is a “Made in America” stamp on the tool. No longer are you stuck with a tiny knife blade that’s not good for anything other than cleaning the dirt out of your fingernails. The knife blade is also full sized, which increases the usability of it. Great for tradesmen such as HVAC, Electricians and anyone who works with wires on a regular basis. It works extremely well on wires up to 12 gauge. We also liked the wire stripper on the jaw. Just grab it off you belt, flick it open, and you’re off to the races. It takes the hassle and aggravation out of having to use two hands to get at a tool that you need. The one hand use is very handy for someone who relies on their multi-tool on a daily basis. It will take a hex adapter to ¼” drive sockets. The Center-Drive accepts all drill bits, so you can use any bits that you have in your toolbox. It’s what makes this tool so useful for a wide variety of lifestyles, trades, and craftsmen. Without a doubt, the feature we liked best was the Center-Drive bit. What’s left was pure simplicity that works every time, all the time. In order to make this tool, Gerber realized that they had to do away with the fluff and gimmicks that nobody uses. The Center-Drive is designed with toughness and durability in mind. It utilizes the metric measurement system. Included in the package is the multi-tool, a sheath, 12-piece bit kit and warranty card. Jobs for when borrowing your girlfriends compact pink multi-tool isn’t going to work. In order to do heavy-duty, rugged jobs, you need a full-sized tool. The Center-Drive was designed at its core to be a tool for the working man. A full-size standard bit driver means that you’ll be able to interchange your Center-Drive bits with the bits in your toolbox. An X-Channel rail system helps eliminate rattle and opens smoothly. A set of spring-loaded pliers instantly appears, ready to grasp, twist and pull anything that gets in its vice-like grip. If you ever encounter an Australian from the Outback, you can now proudly compete in the game of “you call that a knife?”. Flick your thumb once and a full-sized outboard knife appears that is 30% longer than the competition. The driver has also been elongated to 3.2 inches long. The improved ergonomics mean that it won’t fly out of your hands because you can’t get a good grip. This enables you to have more torque when you need it. Full-size driver on the center axis with a standard bit. These areas are designed to help make quick work of any job that the multi-tool is tasked with. Overview of the Gerber Center-Drive MultitoolĪs mentioned before, there are four key areas that Gerber addressed when making this tool. A tool that is designed for real life, heavy-duty work. It’s a tool for men who need to get the job done right. This isn’t a tool for Cub Scouts or guys who wear tight jeans and a scarf while sipping a triple-latte Cappucino. We’ll be reviewing the Gerber Center-Drive Multi-Tool and looking at the innovations as well as the practicality of the design. They identified four key areas where improvements could be made and that the competition had neglected to address. They asked hard-hitting questions that forced them re-think the entire design of the Center-Drive multi-tool. Gerber also took a long hard look at the competition. A need to be able to intuitively and quickly open it up, and get the desired tool you need. It’s born from the burning need of millions of hunters, campers, and tradesmen who need to get the job done the first time around. This isn’t your Dad or your Grandfathers multi-tool. Gerber set out to redesign the multi-tool with the end user in mind. For far too long the multi-tool industry packed a bunch of tools inside an aluminum case and called it a day. A need for a multi-tool that worked as advertised. The Executives at Gerber created the Center-Drive because there was a need that wasn’t being fulfilled in the multi-tool market. Music was also an important touchstone for Cubism more generally. Braque was an amateur musician, and both artists had various instruments in their studios. Musical instruments are easy to identify by parts and lend themselves to the formal transformations foundational to Cubist innovations. In part, musical references are practical musical instruments are more complex and interesting forms than the glassware and bottles that were also common Cubist subjects. Picasso, Braque and Gris did not develop pure abstraction, although artists involved in parallel movements did, including the Orphists, the Rayonists and the Vorticists.Ĭubism was one of the most influential movements of the early twentieth century, shifting traditional pictorial methods and spawning a new generation of styles, including Constructivism, Futurism, Suprematism, De Stijl and Minimalism. The reference to a popular song adds to the multiple ways music is the subject of Analytic Cubist paintings. By 1911 Cubism had become the leading style in Paris and by 1912 its influence was felt worldwide, promoted through the publication of De Cubism, 1912, by Gleizes and Metzinger and Guillaume Apollinaire’s Les Peintres Cubistes (The Cubist Painters) in 1913.ĭuring the second, Synthetic phase of Cubism artists began introducing elements of collage into their work, such as newspaper or chair caning, as seen in Picasso’s Still Life with Chair Caning, 1912, as well as experimenting with constructed sculptures. Artist Juan Gris also began contributing to Cubism during this early phase and by around 1910 a range of other artist also developed similar styles including Fernand Leger, Francis Picabia and Andre Derain. Analytic Cubism was based on close observations of portraiture or still life subjects as seen from a range of viewpoints, painted in muted, earthy colours. Analytic and Synthetic CubismĬubism is now recognised in two stages, Analytic Cubism from 1910-12 and Synthetic Cubism from 1912-14. Both Picasso and Braque were living in Montmartre in Paris around this time and developed a close working relationship - Picasso referred to their friendship as a ‘marriage’, and Braque said, ‘We were like two mountain climbers roped together,’ - so much so it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between their works. One year earlier Picasso also encountered Iberian and African art similar, simplified human forms can be seen in his Demoiselles D’Avignon, 1907. Their influence can be clearly seen in Braque’s L’Estaque landscapes (1908), considered some of the earliest examples of Cubism. In 1907, a retrospective exhibition of work by French Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne was held at the Salon d’Automne including his Montagne Sainte-Victoire series, 1904-06, in which scenes were reduced to broken planes of colour and form, fascinating both Braque and Picasso. Artist Juan Gris said, ‘Truth is beyond any realism, and the appearance of things should not be confused with their essence.’ In a 1908 review, art critic Louis Vauxcelles said Braque, ‘despises form and reduces everything, landscapes and figures and houses, to geometric patterns, to cubes.’ Although initially derogatory, the term Cubism soon took hold. One of their primary aims was to represent reality as we experience it all around us, rather than as a static, unmoving state. Both artists abandoned linear perspective, instead showing objects from varying angles and viewpoints in a geometric, deconstructed style. The two leaders of the revolutionary Cubist style were Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and French artist Georges Braque. |
